EXHIBIT: "Yogic Portraits: Paths from the Self to the Universal"
The exhibit may be viewed at the Gandhi Memorial Center on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and by appointment. For more information: info@gandhimemorialcenter.org or 301-320-6871.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
This exhibition contains 30 works painted over a four year period. The original inspiration come from a series of photographs, some of which were part of a proto-ethnographic project of the East India Company to catalogue the people of India. The paintings in this series decontextualize the images of yogis by relating them to the four yoga paths leading to self-realization: karma or selfless action; bhakti or devotion; jnana or knowledge, and raja or the royal path of self-liberation.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Elisabetta Marmolo works in a variety of media but primarily in oil. She is especially drawn to portraiture, seeking to capture the immediacy of subjects that are not staged but in motion and unaware. Even when working from reference materials, she draws on self-reflection and empathy to reveal the shared human experience. Elisabetta is an economist working in the development field and received art training in Italy, the Philippines and, more recently, at the Smithsonian Institution. Born in Italy, she lives and works in the United states. Her artwork has been exhibited in the United States and can be seen at Elisabettamarmolo.com .
